Here we'll list events and activities scheduled for the year. As noted, specific events are open to the public. In the case of a show or exhibit, the name of the gallery or museum will link to their site.

MPA Fall Paint-out,
Glacier National Paint
October 2, 3, & 4, 2009

Beginning at the historic Bullhead Lodge on the shores of MacDonald Lake, the MPA will begin the paintout painting where artist Charlie Russell spent so much time. At this time of the year, the fall colors will be literally exploding from the landscape. On October 3rd, the group will be traveling to the eastern side of the park between Babb and East Glacier for a totally different type of landscape with aspens and willows sharing their colors with us all. The public is invited and encouraged to stop and visit with each of us. Paintings from this paint-out, plus those from the spring paint-out on the Trask Ranch near Utica, Montana will be on display at the C. M. Russell Museum beginning in May of 2010. Additional information is found on this page.

Group Exhibit "From Study to Studio II"

The MPA is honored to have been asked by the C.M. Russell Museum to produce a show specific to areas that C.M. Russell lived and worked in. Each member of the Montana Painter's Alliance will be submitting 2 plein air pieces from the spring and fall paint-outs from 2009, along with the studio pieces resulting from each plein air piece, for a total of 4 pieces from each artist. This follows our first successful partnership for both the MPA and the Russell Museum in 2008. More information, but stay tuned: this will be well worth seeing... Tentative date for exhibit is May 2010. Contact the MPA or Ann Morand, Curator, C.M. Russell Museum at www.cmrussellmuseum.org for more information.

Spring Paint-out in Charlie Russell's Country
Utica, Montana and surrounding areas of the Judith River
May 22, 23, & 24, 2009

This is the heart of where Charlie Russell worked and painted. Amid the surrounding mountains and onto the plains, little has changed. Abounding with deer, elk, mountain lions, bears, and an occassional moose, Charlie was inspired. We can only hope to capture some of the essence he found there.

Utica, Montana lies about 85 miles east of Great Falls up the Judith River drainage into the Little Belt Mountains. Rolling prairies abut the mountains. The north, south, and middle forks of the Judith River form there and offer a wide selection of scenic and historic venues. Sapphire Village along with numerous ranches offer historic log strucures, some dating back nearly 175 years.

The weather promises to be exceptional. Sites where the MPA artists are most likely to be found are varied, but beginning Friday morning, May 22, here's some possible locations:

Anywhere along highway 541 (from Windham) or highway 239 (from Hobson) to Utica
numerous ranches including the Trask Ranch (look for the signs)
More locations will be added at a later date

We encourage all those interested to come, watch, or paint with us! Just contact us from this site or email a member.
